Bristol Balloon Fiesta 2006

My parents bought me a flight in a balloon as a Christmas and Birthday present last year and Saturday was the day I was scheduled to fly. My mum had organised for me to take a flight during one of the launches at the Bristol Balloon Fiesta. After checking the weather reports on the Friday night it didn't seem likely that a Saturday morning launch would take place but given no cancellation message on the balloon company's weather check line I dutifully turned up to the launch meeting point at 05:30 on the Saturday. After hanging around waiting for the pilots to finish their briefing it was decided that the winds around 500-1000ft were just too fast to allow a safe landing for the balloons so no launches were allowed. Despite this, some of the balloons put on a show for the early risers and inflated their tethered balloons so we could get a look. I spent the time learning how they unpack, inflate, control and pack the balloons while snapping away with my camera and playing with the wide angle lens my friend Dave allowed me to borrow. I took around 3-3.5GB of images throughout the day before I finally gave up around 18:00 to drive home with a 'sun headache'. I thought I'd upload of few of the balloon ones for you too look at.

awh its a shame you couldn't

awh its a shame you couldn't fly. Do you get to reschedule your flight for another time?

I think the first picture is the best although bertie and the flame look a bit strange, I'm not sure why but they do.

Flame?

You mean the 2nd image and the last image? I was trying out something different in the processing and wen't for an 'odder' look. It looks strange but the more I look at it the more it grows on me. Yeah I have to reschedule - I'll phone up tomorrow when I can see my work calender in front of me.

Rebooked

Well I'm re-booked for Friday evening - let's hope the weather's OK.

Rebooking

Will the light be OK for photography? On another tack, what sort of gas do they use to heat the air? I could melt a lot of glass using that large a flame. My little tank of propane for my torch seems to be running out again. Still it seems to last a month for beading. I've been experimenting again with found things around the house to make different shaped beads. Will post pictures when I get the time.

Bad weather

The light would have been fine - if I had gone up....Since it's been thunder and lightening all day I wasn't surprised that the flight was called off. Hmm, looks like I'm going to be stuck in the re-book, flight cancelled loop since we're reaching the end of the overtly sunny / good weather period of the year.

I'm not sure what gas they use. I'll look it up on Google when I'm more awake tomorrow.

I've spent the evening trying to come up with a concept for an entry in the panorama photography competition of Worth1000.com. I think I've got the concept now - I made a few practice panoramas tonight to get a reasonable look. I just need some decent light tomorrow.
