Macro Excitement

I finally got my new macro lens delivered that I ordered a few weeks ago so I've been playing with it this morning. I decided to get the new EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM, which is the new Macro lens from Canon specifically for digital cameras. This is the first 'expensive' lens I've bought but I didn't really have any ideas about how much better quality it would be. Being temporarily bored with photographing the assorted arachnids resident in my flat and lacking immediate inspiration with household objects I thought I'd quickly shoot off a couple of my eye. Little did I know exactly how hard it is to get the photograph you want of your own eye. Having got bored with having to keep turning the camera round to view the latest 'focused on the wrong spot' image and delete it I finally connected it up to my computer to use the remote capture software. This did cut down on my mobility but as my computer is right next to a window with lots of light it wasn't a problem and did mean I could view and delete as needed.

Sitting with my back to the wall, one eye closed and the other trying to 1) decide where the middle of the lens was and 2) focus on that point without moving I proceeded to shoot, and shoot and shoot some more. Each picture was wonderfully sharp and focussed - just not on the area that I wanted it. This added to the fact that I was virtually immobile due to having my legs scrunched up every which way so that the tripod could sit between my legs as I sat on the floor and I was getting frustrated.

Finally I managed to get exactly what I wanted which you can see by clicking on the thumbnail below. I'm loathe to put the full size image up but hopefully you can still 'get' the image at 1/3 size.

After 3 hours I absolutely love this lens. The quality of the images I've been getting are so far amazing compared to my other lenses with little, if any, sharpening required on the RAW file. The lens feels nice and solid and the motor quick and silent. I'm sure that I'm going to have lots of fun with this lens.

(I've deliberately not airbrushed the white of my eye - perfect eyes are boring...)
