Pancake Rocks

Pancake Rocks

We diverted to these rocks off the State Highway 6 at Punakaiki on the West Coast of the South Island following a recommendation in that useful reference book "Lonely Planet New Zealand". Indeed most of the places we stopped at were as a result of these recommendations and made the trip much more enjoyable. The rocks have been formed from layers of Limestone and I think, mudstone which is the softer of the two. Weathering over eons have left the rocks looking like stacks of thin pancakes

Sea

Copy of the unedited still pictures posted to you this evening. I'm saving the .avi of John and I on the zip line for a Christmas showing to the family. The rocks are too huge to clamber over, about 30-40 feet in some cases. You will be better able to see their scale from some of the other still pictures. The site is huge and there is a well defined path around the area which also includes a surge pool among the rocks on a massive scale.

Sea

The sea is so blue in this pic! I'd like to see the larger version of this picture when I get my copy of your holiday disk.

Are you allowed to clamber over the rocks or are you cordoned off from them to preserve them?
