A fine spray of seawater gets ejected at each "blow" if the tide surges are "right". The hole itelf was quite a way from the shore so the caverns underground must be extensive.
Not that much though. Some plants are specialised to tolerate sea water inundation, look at the saltmarshes which are flooded twice every day. The sea lavender growing at the Point on Canvey is salt tolerant for example and so is, I believe, Samphire and which also grows there. It is cooked as a posh vegetable in some restaurants.
I'm surprised at the amount of greenery growing around the hole. I would have thought that the salt from the seawater would kill it off. Obviously not though....
